2016 Cricket Season

With the Winter upon us, not many people’s thoughts will be on the cricket season. However, the cricket season for 2016 is only just around the corner, and the Club’s cricket section’s thoughts are now turning to arrangements for the 2016 season.

The cricket Club has been playing at the Towcestrians since 1933, and continues to thrive with a very buoyant junior section, running teams in the South Northants Junior Cricket Leagues, at Under 9 (Kwik cricket) Under 11, Under 13 and Under 15 levels. We hope to run an Under 17’s team at some point in the future, but currently we do not quite have the facilities to do this. We have a first XI playing in the South Northants Cricket League – they gained promotion last summer.

With approximately 100 youth members of the cricket section, one of the key challenges we face, is having enough coaches to supervise the players; as a minimum parent helpers or coaches have to be police cleared for coaching the children, but other than that, all we really require is enthusiastic and reliable individuals to help us out during the indoor nets (between February and April) and during the summer months.

This is a general plea to Club members, to see if there are any parents (Mums, Dads, Grandparents etc.) who are interested in getting involved with assisting us with the coaching of the junior cricket section at the Towcestrians.

Currently, we need additional support with the Kwik Cricket coaching, in both the indoor sessions at Sponne School (from 6pm on Thursday nights), and also the outdoor sessions in the summer (possibly on a Friday night, but subject to discussion). As well as Kwik Cricket, we also need additional coaches to help run the Under 10s team.

Tony Roberts who has been the Club’s Groundsman (using his experience he has prepared some exceptional cricket pitches over the years) has expressed his desire to hand over the reins, of preparing the cricket wicket, to others members, therefore we are looking for any semi-retired individuals, or indeed any other Club members, who would assist Tony and effectively take over from him over the coming years. All of the equipment is provided by the Club, including rollers, mowers etc. All that is needed is some basic knowledge of using a mower and a roller, and a lot of enthusiasm, complimented with a willingness to learn from Tony.

If anyone is interested in assisting the cricket section with any of the tasks outlined above, please could they contact:

Tony Roberts, who is the current Club Secretary, on tony.roberts@towcestrians.org.uk or

Rob Jones on r.shjones@btopenworld.com

More details of the Winter nets sessions will be sent out shortly, to all of last year’s members, to obtain a rough idea of numbers committed from last year, before these sessions are opened up to new members. As stated above, the major limiting factor currently is the number of coaches, so if anyone would like to find out more, please contact Tony or Rob for further information.
