Hockey Match Reports

1st Team
Towcester 2 – Edgbaston 1

Following a cancelled match and training session in the run up to the first game of the season Towcester really needed to find some form to climb up the league table from 8th place .

Such form was found from the first whistle against a tough team Edgbaston on Birmingham Universities fast moving water based pitch. Tows kept possession and moved the ball with ease to win a penalty corner 15 minutes in. An accurate injection from Laura Whittle out to stick stopper Gemma English left player of the match Lisa Prince time to shoot. Her shot fired past the Edgbaston defence and keeper to thunder into the back board. With one goal up the game looked fairly even but with Tows looking more dangerous on the break. Kate Smith made several good runs to open up the opposition defence leaving Christina Clucas free on the back post to slot a great deflection away to make Tows 2-0 up.

Edgbaston still very much in the game, won and converted a penalty flick. But Towcester held well and finished the game one goal up. A vital 3 points means thy climb the table from 8th to 6th. A much needed confidence boost for next week’s top of the table match against Northampton saints 2pm at Northampton High School.

SECOND TEAM
Towcester 0 – Derby 4

The first league game of 2015 began with Towcester 2s facing top of the league, Derby. Tows played well in the first half, with the Towcester forwards testing Derby’s defence through open play and through a number of penalty corners. With the score even at half time, Towcester continued positively into the second half keen to test Derby further. Tows managed to hold back Derby until the 50th minute when the opposition broke quickly from defence to score their first goal. Despite a lot of hard work and some great team play, the end result was 4-0 to Derby. Towcester 2s face West Bridgford away next week.

THIRD TEAM
Towcester 7 – Kettering 0

It was a convincing win for the third team at the weekend. The first half saw the team warming up after the long Christmas break. We had most of the possession but only a one nil lead at half time. We were frustrated that we hadn’t scored more. The team stepped it up with a much needed run of 3 quick goals after the break. Of the few chances the opposition did have to attack, Louise Rhodes led a fierce effort in defence. Sue Christopher pulled off some great saves to keep the ball out of our net. Goals were flying in the other end with two from Laura Moran, one from Laura Simpson and Nicola Pannell marked her return to the pitch scoring four goals. Final result 7-0. Great game. Well done 3s. Next week Away v wellingborough 2s 11.30am.
