Message from the Chairman

Towcestrians Sports and Social Club is a wonderful enterprise.

It currently has four sports sections – Rugby, Hockey, Cricket and Tennis – and on 1st April will start a new section, Softball.

The clubhouse and grounds facilities are excellent, but like our own homes require money to maintain them.

There are gas, electricity, water, rates and insurance bills to pay – wages to find for bar staff, ground staff and cleaners – and an infrastructure which requires maintenance and improvement, grass to be cut, re-seeded and treated, lights replaced, trees trimmed and so on.

Sports subscriptions are insufficient to pay for all this and on “subs” alone and without volunteers we would have no club!

The “books are balanced” by the social functions that take place where the profits from bar sales, food and room hire provide the income flow to make it all work.

Some of these functions are externally sourced for weddings, Young Farmers, Harley Owners etc and others internally from the sports sections.

Over the next few weeks there is obviously the Six Nations and the club will be showing every one of these matches on the multi screens in the bar.

The 6 Nations Rugby Tournament is being shown live on the TV’s in the club with hot food available every game.
March 1st is Ireland versus England KO 3.00pm and the Saints have loaned us the Premiership Trophy and the Amlin Cup so we are having photo opportunities for all the family!

As a nice bit of light relief between these two matches, the Tennis section are showing a Sing Along Film Night of Grease on Saturday 21st February on the big screen and serving Hot Dogs, Popcorn and Ice Creams. Words will appear on the screen for all the songs and will encourage everyone to Sing Along. No doubt some will wear T Bird or Pink Lady costumes and rated PG the film is suitable for family viewing. Cost is £5 per Adult and £2.50 per child.

On March 13th it is the sell out Ladies Night. Beware all men in a five mile radius! If you’re not going as a “helper” stay in and lock your doors.

March 14th is England versus Scotland with Kick Off at 5pm.

On 20th March we have a repeat of last years very successful Race Night where you can name and own a horse for only £2.50 and bet on the outcome of races. Food on this night will be curry and cost is £5 per ticket, again suitable for all ages.

21st March is a VP’s lunch and also England versus France at 5pm. Followed by a party with free live music and food to buy.

Making these events happen takes a lot of effort from a lot of people across all the sports sections and the reward for these efforts is seeing the fun people have at them and hopefully a bit of money made for the club.

Whilst we would not wish to place undue pressure on anyone attendance at these events and money spent over the bar keeps Towcestrians financially healthy and I do hope that many of you will attend some of your own and other sections events.

Committing early and letting the organisers know if you and your friends will be coming to an event makes it easier to estimate numbers for catering and take some of the risk out of up front spending.

I look forward to seeing you there.
