Rugby Update

Rugby

The first team played Windsor in a top of the table encounter at Green’s Norton Rd on Saturday, and convincingly beat them. The score line flattered the visitors who got two late tries due to some indiscipline from tows leading to 2 yellow cards! Tows played their best rugby and raised their game to complete dominate the team that beat then at home last year! Watch out for the full match report, soon to be published on the senior rugby site. Tows remain 2nd in the league in a playoff position but have now stretched away from Windsor.

Cards were in plenty of evidence at Kettering where the 2nds beat their hosts in what can only be described as a mass brawl. It is reported that there were 30 red cards issued! (sounds like Hallmark’s Sale!). there may be some repercussions! However, the Development Team still sit firmly on top of the league!

The Ultimates won again to stay on top of their league and the Colts had a good win in a friendly against Olney. We even managed to get a 3rd’s “Extra” XV out to play local rival Casuals who they thrashed comfortably!

Hockey

1st team – 3-1 win to North Notts

Under the circumstances a tough away game for Towcester Ladies. With Captain, Kath Pittam out with injury and Vice, Mel Linnell leading a side of just 11. Tows took an early lead with Man of the Match, Ella Bevan creating tactical attacking play in the ‘D’ for Christina Clucas to sweep in a crucial goal. North Notts managed to scrape 1 back in open play followed by an unfortunate own goal created during a dubiously given short corner routine.

Tows going into the second half 2-1 down were up for a battle and with relentless attacking attempts and superb performances from up and coming youngsters Jess Plumbridge, Izzy Plumbridge and Karen Wildman the final score from North Notts during open play rather flattered their performance. A special mention to Caroline Hincks who stepped up to replace Sue Willers in goal, made some decent saves.

Next week the 1s face Olton 2s at home, 3:30pm pushback.

2nd team – 12-1 win to Notts Uni

This proved a tough game as the 2 s took on the undefeated top of the table university side. The young students showed their skills and speed as they attacked and put pressure on the Towcester defence. Tows defeated stoutly and looked dangerous on the counter attack but could not repel the wave upon wave of the Nottingham attack with the final score Tows 1 Uni Notts 12. Whilst the score does not look good, the whole team stuck to the task magnificently with some great performances by Jenny Williams, Nicky Evans Hannah Longland and Lisa Groves making their season debuts for the seconds and more regular s Leanne, Vicky, Shannon, Cheryl, Tracy and a wounded Chloe. My last mention goes to two players who provided a magical moment, when Katherine Taylor set Natasha Day through with a great reverse pass which took 5 defenders out of the game, Natasha raced into the D and finished skilfully to score. So many positives came from the game and a few things to keep working on too!
Next week the 2s face Ashborne away 10:30am push back.

3rd team – 6-0 win to Towcester

Towcester 3s took on Saints 4, after a disappointing result last week and losing a key defender to injury Towcester were hungry for a Win. From the starting whistle Towcester were in control of the game creating endless chances in front of goal, but frustratingly unable to find the back of the net. Orla Piercey played exceptionally well in right midfield, putting in some strong tackles to prevent saints attacking and making some great runs down the wing to provide our attackers with some great opportunities. Mid-way through the first half Lauren Mercer slotted the goal home on the back post. 1-0 at half time did not reflect the chances we had in front of goal from Zoe Phillips and Elaina Duck. As the second half progressed Jo Bradley and Bea Bridge controlled the game in Midfield and created chances of their own hitting the cross bar and post. Endless short corners eventually saw a goal from Lauren mercer after she got on the end of a save from the saints keeper. Further goals from Laura Morran 2, another from Mercer, making her hat trick, and one from Bradley gave Towcester the win 6-0. Player of the match was Orla Piercey.
Next week the 3s face Rushden and Higham at home 2pm push back.
