About

Towcestrians Sports Club is a non-profit-making, multi-sports club offering rugby, cricket, tennis, hockey, netball and archery.

We support both competitive and recreational sport and actively encourage people of all ages to get involved across our sections. At Towcestrians, we work hard, play hard, stay active and, above all, have fun.

History & Development of the Club

The Old Towcestrians Rugby Club was founded in 1933 by ‘old boys’ of Towcester Grammar School (now Sponne School Technology College). The following summer, the Old Towcestrians Cricket Club was established, naturally attracting many members from the rugby club as well.

The two clubs operated independently until the mid-1960s. Rugby was played in the centre of Towcester, while the cricket club used the school pitch, pavilion and canteen – including those wonderfully English cricket teas!

In 1967, discussions began about bringing the two clubs together to form a combined ‘open’ club. Negotiations with Hesketh Estates began over the availability of land, while the committees worked on a constitution for the new organisation. By February the following year, a 30-year lease had been signed for nine acres of land off Greens Norton Road. The merger was formally approved in March, and Towcestrians Rugby and Cricket Club moved forward under the chairmanship of Colin Wakelin.

First tennis, and then hockey joins too…

Interestingly, Old Towcestrians Tennis Club was considerably older than both the rugby and cricket clubs, having originally been formed in 1925. It joined the club in the summer of 1968, adding another sport to the growing Towcestrians family.

In August 1969, planning permission was granted for further facilities, and construction began on the clubhouse and surrounding grounds. The new ground was officially opened a year later, in August 1970 – a major project made possible by the extraordinary voluntary efforts of club members.

The Hockey Club joined in 1982 and initially made use of the grass pitch. Changes to hockey regulations eventually meant a move to artificial pitches in Northampton.

Recent developments…

The club has continued to grow. In 2017, netball joined Towcestrians, adding another popular and welcoming sport to our offering. In 2020, we also welcomed Towcester Archers, an active, inclusive and accessible sport that can be enjoyed by the whole family.

In September 2019, our new state-of-the-art hockey pitch opened, bringing hockey back to its “home” after 26 years of playing on rented pitches. This has allowed the section to expand its ladies’ teams, while also establishing two men’s teams alongside junior, mixed and Masters sides.

Superb modern facilities…

Today, we have a modern clubhouse that is large enough to host sizeable social events and is also available as a venue for weddings, parties and get-togethers. We also have a state-of-the-art gym run by AWG Fitness, an upgraded kitchen, new toilet facilities and an outdoor BBQ area. In July 2013, we completely refurbished and extended the changing rooms and physiotherapy suite.

For a sports club of any size, and regardless of the size of Towcester itself, we really pack some punch!
