Towcester vs Northampton Saints

Final score 3-1 to Northampton Saints

Towcester currently in 6th place in Midlands Division One looking to hold on to a mid table place to avoid the relegation zone. This week we faced top of the table unbeaten local rivals Northampton Saints. On paper the two teams couldn’t be more apart, on the starting whistle however it was Towcester who started strongest. Good right sided link up play between Gemma English, Laura Whittle and Ella Bevan along with solid defending at the back left Tows with chances on goal and some short corners. They were unable to capitalise and Saints seized the opportunity to take the advantage with a well worked first goal. Spurred on from this the Northampton side went on the attack to win a penalty flick. Towcester keeper and superb player of the match Sue Willers denied Saints player Sarah Brimyard the opportunity to score!
The first half continued with end to end battles but once again Saints stole a goal. At 2 nil down going into the break it was still all to play for. Having kept Saints at bay and not giving away any short corners in the first half Towcester gave away 4 short corners in the second half. The opposition only managing to put away one out of four of these to go three nil up . Still fighting strong Tows were by no means defeated and Laura Whittle took the ball from the half way around 5 saints players to make a champagne solo run into the D and fire the ball home to keep Tows in the game. Despite further chances from both sides, Tows failed to convert chances and the score line remained 3 goals to 1 .
Another home match for the first team next week against leamington 2pm push back at Northampton High School for Girls . All supporters welcomed.
